I would like to compare some numbers but I first need to know the population of Canada in 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000

Statistics Canada - that's their job. Just Google it.

Statistics Canada publishes its' census from previous census years. If they are not all available online, you can try to purchase them through the goverment publications store, or go to your local library where they should be available to you.
