Brandon Webb from Arizona wins. Hoffman is a reliever but got a lot of votes and came in second. Carpenter was third after being fairly close in stats, plus a World Series ring. Oswalt had a lower ERA than Webb and came in fourth for a Houston team that did as much as Arizona. What do you think? Who shoulda win? Do you agree with Webb?

Webb deserved it. Carpenter was not as impressive or as dominating this year, as he was last year. Hoffman got votes for breaking the record. Webb deserved it.

Well, the World Series ring doesn't get considered because the writers vote before the start of postseason play.

My personal ballot would have been:

1) Carpenter
2) Oswalt
3) Webb

I would not include Hoffman, because I don't think you can justify giving the award to someone who pitched 60 innings when you have others contributing 200+ in a season.

Part of my reasoning for picking Carpenter is that he had a lot of "big" games where he gave up 0-3 runs, more than either Oswalt or Webb. And I'd rather have a guy who has those big games with the occasional horrible one instead of a guy like Oswalt who is amazingly consistent, but who didn't have as many games where he completely shut down the opponent. And even with those weird fluctuations that Carpenter had, he still managed some consistency - a 3.08 ERA before the break, and 3.09 the rest of the way.

For some explanation of what I'm talking about with Carpenter's 0-3 run games, this article explains it well:

Webb had it nailed down in July and nobody beat him so I guess he deserves it. It is the first time a non playoff team starter has been in the running. Randy Johnson deserved it when he was in his last year with AZ but they passed him over because they didn't make the playoffs. who knows how these guys think.

Brandon Webb is my favorite player, so yes I think he deserved it. I saw every game he pitched this past last season, he had very little run support and his slider was very dominate every time.
