Stupidity is not the inherent problem, though it doesn't help.
Democracy fails in any country that is highly polarized, to the point where different sides aren't willing to work together on a compromise.
The concept of democracy (pure, direct, rep republic, whatever) is that people collectively choose someone to make decisions for everyone. But inherent in that must be a willingness to accept the decisions made, even if the person chosen is not who you voted for.
The US is barely managing to remain a democracy, with the amount of polarization currently in place. And that's only because we have 230 of practice and interitia holding us together.
A new country, such as Iraq, that doesn't have that stability cannot form a democracy where there is so much sectarian infighting, distrust and outright rebellion. They just aren't conherent enough to agree to a common leadership, and any leader strong enough to force control is effectively a dictator.

Yes. In countries like Iran where mothers have been slaves for centuries, and support their enslavement even when offered a chance to be free.
In religious countries where religion dominate the peoples lives democracy is bound to fail. They do not under stand the basic freedoms guranteed each human on earth by the act of being human. They will folow what ever loudmouth cleric whose's only effert in life is to make things worse for them, and his control tighjter.
Mothers and fathers who volunterry send their children out to die for not defense but religion are Insane period.

hhmmmm... Democracy only fails when the people decide they can vote themselves the contents of the Treasury, or the content of their neighbor's wallet... which of course is idiotic.
