i agree that keeping it tidy and free of clutter will help. Adopt a minamilist style but do do a search on the subject for some great advice. for example, stylists say that using large tiles in a small bathroom makes it look bigger-- i agree.
wallpaper and paint choices will make the difference if you have a minimal style. light paint removes the claustrophobic feeling from a room. mirror panels may provide a good effect if placed on an open wall.
try rearranging furniture, live with it for a few days and find the compromise between what makes the room appear bigger and what is functional and feels comfortable to live in

Light colors. A lighter colored ceiling will make it look taller.

to make a room look bigger you should have white walls and try not to use busy patterns , also get patio doors leading out use tyles or wooden flooring not carpet :) good luck!
