This is how to compress old files on your drive, it assumes you are using XP.
1 - Right click on My Computer and select Manage
2 - Click on Disk Management and find the C: drive
3 - If it is NTFS, skip to step 11
4 - If it is Fat32, do the following:
5 - click start, run, type cmd
6 - in the command prompt type convert C: /fs:ntfs
7 - enter the volume label, this the name of the drive in bold letters in disk management
8 - when it asks to dismount enter N
9 - when it asks to perform it on next reboot enter Y, reboot it will run a disk check and convert the drive. At this point it may error out if you do not have enough free space. If that happens you will need to delete some stuff or burn it to a cd an put it back later.
10 - Now your drive it ntfs, and we can compress it
11 - open my computer, right click on C: and select properties
12 - on the general tab at the bottom is a checkbox to compress the drive, check it and hit apply
13 - choose the option to apply to subfolders (should be default) - the process will take some time to complete.
14 - let it compress the drive and reboot. This should save you a gig or more. You can possibly save about 25% of the amount of data you have, but it depends greatly on what type of data it is.

I had luck with (1) Look at "Recycle bin" and if you can tell stuff is there that you TRULY won't ever ever ever need again (be careful) then trash it and (2) defragment your drive - it takes awhile but it makes space more available.
Also, "disk cleanup" may help you find software installation procedures that are no longer needed. For example when I downloaded OpenOffice, it downloaded and installed the entire package, of course, but left a copy of the software in the installation procedure. It is a large package, so I had two copies eating up space. By the time you count lots of pieces of software, that can be a fair amount!

For a good software program that is free, go to http://www.download.com/Advanced-WindowsCare-Personal/3000-2086-10407614.html?part=dl-AdvancedW&subj=uo&tag=button. This will clean up junk files and temp folders and also clean your registry and give virus, spy & malware protection. Good luck. Mikie.

Remove all your music and movie files by cutting then pasting on to flash drives. Very convenient. And these files are always large.
