Can anyone explain why spectacles are so expensive.Material / labour costs in manufacturing must be very low.?

There are 2 kinds of highly trained professionals, who went to good universities and obtained good degrees but merely work in a shop as a sales, they are opticians and pharmacists.

they are highly skilled professional, but they might spend a lot of time in the shop waiting for customers, so their products have to have good profit margin.

I have a friend who has just become a lens technician, and so now I understand why glasses or spectacles are so very expensive.

1) Yes! the materials ARE expensive to start with becuase they are specialised for the purpose.
2) Spectacles remain a customised product, i.e. made for your specific prescription and this takes time & skill to get correct. Otherwise if wrong a persons sight can be damaged in the long term.
3) Spectacle lenses have to be shaped & curved to very very fine parameters so they work correctly, the aim of the lens shape is to balance or correct the users vision again this requires alot of skill from the lens technician. In other words its a highly skilled job and a technicians time & knowledge is costly.

I dont know about the frames themselves though.

non prescription spectacles which work fine for far sighted vision problems due to aging can be purchased in US for about $12. Only if you need prescription ones are they expensive. Then you are paying for the labor of custom work.
