Actually, he didn't starve, he was a vegetarian, but that just didn't fit into the poem as easy so just saying he had no roast beef or "none" was simpler. Hope that clarifies for you, have a great day!

Because they were making a bad rhyme of "home" and "none". When I was tiny, I did not recognize the rhyme, so I felt free to rewrite the verse to go, "This little piggie had chicken". I liked chicken!

The third pig was the smart one (remember the brick house ?) and would not clog his arteries eating that muck. He probably had fish instead, on a little dish, the next day when the boat came in.
