Ask him or her. I used to have a guinea pig and my grandpa would always tell me, "if you pull on your guinea pig's tail, his eyes will pop out."

A scared guinea pig makes really high pitched squeaking while being picked up. They run away. Some may bite but it is very, very rare. I have had over 40 guinea pigs and I've not once been bitten by one.
A happy guinea pig will squeak for food, make little squeaky noises while being petted, will take food from your hand.
Liz - a happy or unhappy guinea pig will relieve itself anywhere and everywhere, by the way. They don't just have one spot where they poop and pee!
Oh and bill_the_cockroach..... guinea pigs don't have tails so that would be kinda hard!!??

When guinea pigs are scared, they usually hide anywhere they can; a hutch, the corner of their cage, or behind another animal. Loud noises and sudden movements are a sure way to frighten them. If they are scared they will run around the cage, kicking bedding anywhere and not let you pick them up. Another indication that they're scared is that they will go to the bathroom everywhere.
When they are happy, their actions are usually the opposite; they will lie in the middle of their cage all streached out. Sometimes they will shy away from your hand, but if you go slow, they will usually let you pick them up.

Well this is how u know when they are scared, When u go near the cage they run away from u and when u pick them up they make a sound.
When they are happy they will call for u at times and they will lay down on u if they are not and stay still.

stand by the cage and begin to eat an apple or an orange if your pig makes noise he/she is fine.
mine is two and i had to get another one to keep him company because all he was doing was sleeping all day.
also a good way to see if your pig is scared is by picking him/her up hold him/her in your arms and if him/her tries to run into your armpit or under you jumper/jacket he/she is not used to being handled.
they do need loads of attention, but the fruit trick should work bite a bit of the fruit off and hold it in front of he/she and if he/she takes it he/she is not ill maybe just lonely

Heart rate is usually a good indicator. Also, interaction with yourself and other guinea pigs would give you a clue. I'm no expert though...

When relaxed they have a range of gentle chirruping and squeaking, they will lie stretched out and have half-closed eyes. If scared they hide anywhere they can.
