White spots on the fingernails is not an indication of a vitamin or mineral deficiency, like many believe. A calcium or zinc deficiency causing these white spots is a common old wive's tale. These spots, called leukonychia, are normally a result of nail injury.

Do u mean the white spots at the start of the nail?

If so, Im 100% sure its the new nail growing.

well all the other answers says it is calcium. i was taught that the white spots were bruises when you damaged the nail like slamming it in a door or banging it on a hard surface.

Lack of zinc. Depending on how quickly your nails grow, at the time that spot was formed, you were probably low in zinc. A zinc supplement might be called for.

If it's just one spot it's probably from banging it. If it's lots of white spots it indicates calcium and zinc deficiency. Eat some nuts and seeds!

unfortanatly you are all wrong it has nothing to do with a calcium def its called nail bruises i went to the docs once and asked the same question and he said they were nail bruises calcium or lack of does not cause these marks!

It is calcium deficiency. Speak to your doctor about how much dairy you eat. You can get calcium tablets if you have a reasonable amount a day.

It could be calcium defficieny if its on just about every fingernail, if its just on one fingernail its more than likely the nail has just been bumped or trapped by accident.
