There is no person on this earth that cannot learn. If you have a student with cognitive disabilities, you have to choose what is most appropriate to teach them, life skills. You would not teach a child who will never fully comprehend text to read a book, but to recognize those words/phrases/signs that will enable them to live their lives. An example would be a bus schedule or sign that says poison. You give them the opportunity to be part of a community by helping them go to the public pool to swim or go bowling with a group.

Uneducable

EVERY Child is educable to some degree -- and that is for certain.

I do NOT ever want to see the day when we make the determination that child x (with these disabilities) will NOT be allowed to be educated -- it is like the dark ages where when Doctors noticed something seriously wrong with a child -- they confined them to institutions for the rest of their lives -- very scary indeed.

Being a Long-Term Single Parent, and one where all of her children had disabilities -- I can assure you that (and I do have an Asperger's Syndrome Child (now adult -- Autism Spectrum Disorder)) they ARE educable -- and even have tested out as highly gifted. That is why I INSISTED that they be given and participate in the Gifted/Talented Programs that the District offered -- and believe me -- for the most part -- they were USUALLY the ONLY children with Disabilities in these classes --- a real lesson in Diversity for the remainder of the class (and I did have to FIGHT at times -- because there was one teacher in particular that did NOT Want any child with a Disability in the Gifted/Talented Programs EVEN THOUGH THEY EARNED the RIGHT to be there!)

It is the LAW of America that EACH child is entitled to a "Free and Appropriate Public Education" -- so there is no going back anymore. Free and appropriate means just that.

Everyone can learn something. For some, a small task like raising a hand or moving fingers and toes is learning. Everyone is entitled to an education. They may not learn the same as others and to most people may seem to not be able to learn. Teachers of children with disabilities can see what the children learn as small as the skill might be.

Working in special education, I have been asked repeatedly..."What about the smart kids? Why don't you focus on them?" Everyone deserves quality of life. Providing a special needs child with functional skills only allows them to become productive members of society. Everyone is educable. Only those who are ignorant would think otherwise. Good luck on your project!

I can't believe you could ask this question. If your talking about mentally challenged people, they are more than educable. It would be completely and totally immoral to even consider them to be so stupid that we can't even educate them. These are people. They are real people, they want to be more than anything just like everyone else. I think we have an obligation to give them that every chance. Treat them like normal people, give them a chance. Theres someone in that body that thinks and dreams just like you and I do. Just because they're body is crippled on the outside doesn't mean that they shouldn't be educated because they cant be.
I can't even believe that anyone would consider that.

I do not believe there is such a thing. Many children have different abilities and a truly gifted and insightful teacher should be able to learn from the student how they can best be educated. I live with one and he has made a believer out of me. I feel blessed that he can be a step-grandfather to my little ones as well as he has made their lives better.

I feel equally blessed every time a student, of any ability, comes up and talks to him, gives him a hug or handshake, or just smiles and says "I remember you Mr. K".

It's not possible to educate the uneducable. That what the word
uneducable means. Why waste money, time, and manpower on trying to accomplish an impossible task???

I don't believe there is such a thing as one who cannot be educated. Now there are different abilities and different amounts each can learn, but even the lowest of intellectual abilities can learn something.
As a teacher, I must believe that all children can learn.

Most certainly. I did not have children with special needs but they deserve to learn just like anyone else. Put yourself in that situation and it was your child how do you think you would feel then? Makes a difference huh!
