pedal edema is usually secondary to fluid overload, or poor blood circulation in the leg. Elevate your ankles and really limit your sodium, also make sure your shoes aren't too tight.

If you aren't pregnant then this could be due to poor circulation or clothes that are too tight or you could have problems with the veins in your legs. Assuming that you haven't sprained or twisted your ankle.
If it gets better either when you sit down with your feet up or when you stand up and walk around, then it is probably poor circulation.
Try not to sit with your legs crossed as this will often make it worse.
If you ankles only get a little swollen then it probably isn't worth worrying about. If your ankles swell until they are as big or bigger than your knees (and isn't injured) then go see the Dr. especially if you are pregnant!
Support tights/stockings/sock and those flight sock can help if it bothers you.

It could be that your heart is not doing it's job properly and the circulation around the legs is poor. Do you have varicose veins as this could be Pooling of the blood as the veins cannot lift it efficiently from lower to upper legs?
Do you sit around a lot? If you do try to put your feet up on a stool as this helps with blood circulation. Do you stand a lot during the day? Try to walk more instead using a car or bus as this stimulates the circulation. There are a lot of possibilities so your best action would be to visit a doctor. They will check out your blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar level and so on.
Be sure to take a sample with you from your first of the morning when you get up.

many things cause this :
1) heat - warms loosens the lymph glands and causes fluid retention on the ankles
2) certain blood pressure tablets called "calcium channel blockers" and anti-diabetic tablets called "..glitazones" can cause swelling of the ankles as a side effect
3) existing heart conditions like heart failure can because of the hearts inability to deal with large volumes of fluids.
- elevating the legs to hip level will help.
if uncomfortable your doctor could issue you with a water tablet but be aware that you must know where all the toilets are if ur out and about!!

Inadequate history. How old are you? Do you have a pre-existing chronic condition eg hypertension or kidney disease? Did you sprain your ankle recently? It is difficult to tell. Go see your MD to evaluate this

its usually retention of fluid but this could be for a number of reasons eg heart failure but without knowing your medical history it is hard to answer ...suggest speaking to your gp.

That's odd.. perhaps you are allergic to something..? or, maybe low blood circulation..? I would recommend seeing a doctor, before
this becomes any worse.
