Sanskrit was the first language that was written down so we say it was the first. It all depends on what you define as language. Primitive man certianly had language, but did not have the means to write it down and standardize it. So, if you ask what the first language is, you must first define language, and there are whole graduate programs that explore this problem. It is a simple qustion with a very complicated answer.

Do you mean" What was the first language to be spoken "? If that's what you're asking, I would say a few grunts and groans.
If you mean first in importance, it would have to be either English or Chinese depending on your own idea of importance.
Chinese is spoken by more people that any other language, but just about all of it is spoken in one concentrated part of the world. Many would say English because it's spread all over the world. International airplane pilots get their landing instructions in English, even a Russian plane landing in Italy.
So the answer to your question has to be left open to personal opinion.

Written or spoken?
Well, I guess no one knows what was first spoken, but there are people who study the roots of language - it's kinda neat.
Chinese may be the earliest still living language - but it's writing has changed a lot over the years too.
Best of luck.

I hate to contradict so many Christians who have tried in all honesty to answer this question for you, but the first cities (Ur, Uruk etc) were Sumerian, and they spoke Sumerian. The oldest known of written language is Linear B used by the ancient Minoans, and this predates Sanskrit by a millenium.

Based on cladistic studies, which involves the comparison of different languages to determine the first to evolve or break out from a common stock, Khoi-san of Africa is the oldest.
If you consider written records, then Sumerian is the oldest because it was in existence before Egyptian heiroglyphics; the indo-european language sanskrit can be argued to be one of the oldest because of its rich literary background that was claimed to be passed down orally for generations before being written down.
