Germany feels a lot like the northeastern US, perhaps northern New Jersey or Connecticut. I mean that in terms of climate, land forms, vegetation, population density, and traffic patterns.
Germany is a constitutional democracy, with a Parliament led by a Prime Minister. It has nearly the same freedoms as the US, but has a lot more regulation of daily activities. For example, recycling is the law everywhere in Germany. Almost all refuse in Germany must be recycled or composted; only about 15% of the waste stream actually goes into landfills or incinerators. Speed limits are more generous, but more strictly enforced (usually by radar camera) than in the US. Jaywalking is practically nonexistent; people almost always wait for a green light at a crosswalk.
Germany uses the Euro, which currently exchanges at the rate of about $1.30 for each Euro. The net effect of this exchange rate is to make goods seem quite expensive to Americans here. Some things are significantly more expensive here than in America: gasoline is roughly twice as much here as in the US. The Value Added Tax (VAT), essentially a sales tax, is 17%, and will go up to 19% on January 1, 2007.
The typical German diet is quite similar to an American diet, with more emphasis on pork as a main dish, and less emphasis on beef. But because Germany can get food products from all around the European Union, there's always a wide variety of food available in German supermarkets.
New houses in Germany are usually built of concrete rather than wood. This can make them seem a little sterile architecturally, but structurally they're very sound. Doors don't squeak and floors don't creak simply because concrete doesn't sag or change size and shape with the weather.
The government and the economy in Germany are more socialized than in the US. Taxes are higher, which means there are more government programs, especially in the areas of health care and child care. Health care is nationalized, in a system similar to the ones in Great Britain and Canada. Families with children receive a monthly stipend called "kindergeld" ("child money") to assist them in supporting their children.
Germany's population is a relatively old one, with low birth rates. In fact, the proportion of ethnic Germans in the population is declining, a fact which has Germans concerned. Also, Germany's death rate exceeds the sum of its birth rate and net migration rate, meaning the country's population is declining slighty (see the CIA World Factbook, link below). The major ethnic minority in Germany is comprised of Muslims, mostly Turks. There are approximately 80 million citizens in Germany, about 4 million of whom are ethnically Turkish. Turks have moved to Germany in great numbers for employment opportunities in Germany's "Gastarbeiter" ("guest worker") program.

East Germany used to be a russian-german country called Prussia. Germany has originated from Germania and also the Holy Roman Empire. Germany was part of the axis group, along with Italy, and Japan. Dresden is one of the most historical cities in Germany. The allied powers bombed Dresden the most, leaving it in ruins still today. In the Worldcup, Germany vs. The Netherlands is always a big deal, because of the past games. German is a latin based guteril (or however you spell it) language. Germans are not nazis', so don't accuse us of being them just because of our ancestors.
