Well, ludicrously The Boston Red Sox have paid $51.1m just to talk to the ace pitcher from japan. If Matsuzakas team don't accept Bostons Offer then he is not goign anywhere until hes a Free Agent. Thats when things get interesting. If i was matsuzakas team i would accept Bostons offer. Cash in, get more talent...

(ok im a sox fan so im slightly biased)

They DID accept the offer and the negotiations have begun. The Sox will sign him for about 13mil for 3-4 years. More importantly they will have prevented the Yankees from getting him.

If I was Matsuzaka I'd turn down the offer from the Sox and wait until I gain International Free Agency. He has seen how desperate teams are for him and he'll be able to gain a better deal in Free Agency when teams can use some of the posting fee money they had saved on his salary.

There's little doubt that Matsuzaka is the real deal based on his performances in the World Baseball Classic, but the Red Sox will be going top dollar to the tune of $12m per year to secure his services. Based on what we have so far, this would appear to be the going rate for someone so good and I just hope he's more Ichiro than Irabu...

Its an excellent move by the Red Sox, Matsuzaka is probably going to be on the standard of Ichiro, and thats more than enough.

He will not play in the United States. He will remain in Japan in which case the Red Sox will have the 51 million returned to them. At the same time, they will have stopped the Yankees from getting him. Not so "ludicrous" after all!!

Chow!!

So he is the world's finest pitcher? So why does that mean he gets paid all this money? Why can't the money in this world be given to those who need it, like doctors and nurses?

Oh well, whatever I think about it, these talks have gone ahead anyway.
And I agree with you, an opportunity like this should never be missed :)
