I think the whole government involvement in this issue hoses everyone! The waitress that runs their butts off serving unruly customers, trying to keep a smile and then to have the tips for going above and beyond being needed just to make ends meat. The customers who are now expected to tip, even if service is crap! Or they get raised by their extremly liberal friends for making people who are poor and have to waitress, suffer.
What the hell, since when did Waitressing become a low end job with no dignity!! Oh yeah, since the government got involved! No wonder service in America has been loosing ground to other nations rapidly over the past 10 years.
So the answer to your question is some do, some don't and even though some work really hard, the restraunts they work at don't allow them to get there! Don't get much of a tip ona $10 breakfast at Denny's.

I could write a book with this one, My spouse was a waitress for five years, loved the people, but the income was poor. Since the IRS could not monitor the tips, they changed the laws and reduced the hourly wage to offset the tips (If any). I believe they should have at least got an average before doing this. Most waitresses will go hungry now, unless they work for a High Price Tag restaurant.

not always. some places do not get big tippers.
some places deduct a certain amount from your minimum wage Pay because they asume you will get tips. I know a waiter in Fraser Colo that gets paid $2.50 per hour. ( apparently this is legal to do if you have waiters)
Also the fed government assumes you will get 8% average tips so they require the boss to deduct from your pay the taxes on same based upon, not your pay or hours but, the amount of the cost of food you sold as waiter. they figure that the waiter got the tips so take it out of pay.
Sometimes a waiter may OWE the boss on payday because his assumed tips exceeded the amount of his minimum wage (or below) paycheck.
it is legal to pay youths below minimum wage and that is what a lot of McDs do.
So... when you eat and get a waitperson please tip generously. they need it for the rent. 10% for normal service. 8% for poor service and 15%-20% for good or great service.
There are probably some hungry kids at home waiting for mom or pop to come home with your change. These are the working poor. DONATE

No, they don't. The tips aren't any kind of wage compensation. And our favorite uncle Sam taxes 8 to 10 percent of your total sales, whether you make the tips or not, and the employers won't make up the difference because they think you're making the minimum.
That's why I won't be a waitress again in this lifetime.

Technically they make less than minimum wage per hour, plus whatever tips they earn. Supposedly, the tips will even out their salary to about minimum wage. In can vary, though. A lower scale, more informal restaurant will generate fewer tips as will certain shifts, like mid day.

Yes, they are usually paid a minimum of $2.13 an hour depending on the state laws, however with their tips included if they do not meet the minimum wage, their employer must make up the difference. In other words if your minimum wage is $5.15, the employee must make at least $3.02 an hour in tips.
