Many years back (30's & 40's) cars had signal arm indicators, but for 10 years I have tried to find out which was the first production car to have winking indicators instead of signal arms, and who invented them. Can anyone help here please? I reckon it was just post war and american but beyond that I can go no further.

The first flashers I ever saw was on a Ford popular ( code name 100E) back in the late 50s. I was a young apprentice mechanic, and I told my boss that it had a fault on its lights, I had only ever seen semaphore (arm) type indicators up to then.

Past my driving test in Ford Popular 800 cc in 1967 even though i had to bang for the arm to spring out.The car had no stop lights and just one red light that also illuminated the number plate on drivers side rear.

Sister Margaret had one and I believe it was a '42 or '43 Ford.
