Simple kids see the cartoon and then they see the item at the store and they bug the parents to get that item.

One of the news stations did a test with a plain Chocolate Cupcake and another Chocolate Cupcake but with Scooby on it.

All of them wanted the scooby cupcake. They can relate to the scooby cupcake evem though both of them were identical except for the decoration.

Marketing costs money. And most companies spend their marketing dollars where they are most effective. That means they market to those who make (or very strongly influence) the purchase decision for their products.

So if companies are marketing to children - that means that children decide (or heavily influence) what is bought. Some studies show that children even play a significant role in the choice of what cars people buy!

The only way to get companies to stop marketing to children (if that is what society wants to happen) is to curb children's influence on what is bought. Which means parents taking more control: saying no more often, not giving in to the children so much.

Children can control what their parents buy.

It is a disgusting thing that should be illegal. Big business should leave children alone.

Because it's easy to get them to want something and most parent's don't have the guts to stand up to their kids anymore.

I don't think the problem lies with the company, I think the problem is the parents. They need to stop trying to be their kids' friend and starting learning to say "no" again.
