The Pythagoreans believed in absolute rationality and order in the universe.
Ambiguity was scowled upon and even neglected and penalised.

Their mathematical achievements reflect much of this philosophy. For them it was all 'can do', and if they couldn't 'it's in plain sight but we haven't found it yet...Not that we're stupid, it's just the determinism set upon us by the governing divine order'
