I would love to create a game website online. Something cool like neopets or Clubpenguin or something, but how do you get started? And how is it backed up? Is this one of those things that actually costs a lot to get up and running and to maintain?

Seems to me that you'll need to give thought to purchasing a domain name, rent server space to store it and most importantly, develop the game in some programming platform. I'm not sure of all the types of programming that will work with a web-based game, maybe it would be some sort of java application.

Another consideration you'll need to consider is how you'll set up accounts for people to play. Will it be a free-for-all website, or will players need to pay a monthly fee? If it is the latter, then you need to consider some sort of billing system to collect payment. Finally, you'll have to give bandwidth consideration. If you game becomes popular, you may have to move your website to more powerful servers that can handle a higher load.
