Yes as everyone has stated he is holding a sling in one hand and a rock in the other. The statue that everyone views is supposed to be an exact copy, the Italian government has the other one in a vault because of damage being done a while back to priceless sculptures. He re-marked 'Peita' because another artist was stealing his glory which angered Michelangelo so much that he took a hammer and chisel and signed MICHAELA[N]GELUS BONAROTUS FLORENTIN[US] FACIEBAT (Michelangelo Buonarroti, Florentine, made this), he later regretted doing it. David and Pieta are considered to be his best sculptures.

The slingshot is held over his shoulder while the other over-sized hand holds the rock. Unlike Donatello, who depicted the heroic David with Goliath's head at his feet, Michelangelo selected the tense moment before the battle.

He is holding a sling....and he is standing on a rock or a stump..and a branch is supporting his right leg...do you have another questions about Michelangelo?...:)
and it's not true what Sarah said..Michelangelo liked his finished work (David)...and he haven't students...only one boy hed lived with him..but it wasn't very talented..so his work has to make food and to clean Michelangelo's home...I've read a book about Michelangelo's live...so..i know many things about him...

i've seen the David before in real life...i don't remember exactly what he is holding or standing on. i do know that Michelangelo did not like his finished product, so in the middle of the night he tried to break it apart. some of his students stopped him and convinced him that it looked wonderful.

He is holding a sling before going to battle wit Goliath.
