Ah, isn't English wonderful? It's presumably because their roots are from words that were pronounced very differently, or it could be part of a big conspiracy to confuse foreigners.

Simply because English is a very complex, confusing language. We have such a myriad of different cultures that were brought into our language, so different words come from different ways of pronouncing them throughout the world.
