The terms "jackass" and "mule" refer to the same animal. This crossbreed is created by mating a horse and a donkey. I am not sure of the timing of when this was first done. It was done in order to create a larger pack animal that was more biddable than a horse.
The Donkey and the Burro are closely related and simply evolved (as did the horse) from the small horse-like mammals that existed even during the time of dinosaurs (although they were much smaller than) in different climates and geological conditions. The main difference between these two animals is size. The donkey is much larger and developed in europe and asia. The burro comes from mexico and the americas in general and is smaller due to the harsher conditions in which it developed.

Mule: A domesticated, hybrid animal that results from crossing a mare (female horse) and a jack (male donkey).
Donkey: A domesticated ***.
Which, of course, begs the question "What is an ***?" Thankfully, Mule Barn also provides a definition of this particular animal.
***: A four-footed, hoofed mammal related to the horse, but smaller, with longer ears and a shorter mane, shorter hair on the tail, and a dark stripe along the back.

I also believe (if I remember correctly) that a mule cannot breed.

Donkeys, Burros and Jackasses are the same thing except the Jack is a Male...A Mule is a Mix between a Horse and Jack and is Sterile. Burro's may be a little smaller..not sure!
