Assuming a pure substance, (this method will not work on mixtures).
1. Dissolve in Carbon disulphide. (The compound is now banned in schools)
2. Allow to evaporate in a fume cupboard.
3. The presence of yellow rhombic like crystals is a test for S.
4. Melt a sample and do a MP test.
5. Melt a few grammes and allow to cool in air. Needle like crystals will be formed.

you can get a sample of water and take to your local soil and water conservation office. however just use your nose if you can smell it you got it but if you cant smell it then you may have traces of the element.you can look in your yellow pages and find a lab that does water analysis.
