I think my friend's brother has been abused. He is 15. The problem is I am 16 and they (the police ) probably won't listen to me. What should I do?

Just because you are 16 does not mean that your allegations won't be taken seriously. Please contact your state's Child Protective Service's Central Registry. Explain to the operator why you think your friend's brother is being abused and what you have witnessed or heard. You do not have to give them your name. They don't even need to know that you are only 16.

What will happen is, if they have enough to go on they will refer your call to your county's CPS unit and local law enforcement. Those two agencies will investigate the claim and take it from there. No one needs to know that you were the one to call.

But, if you are really scared to call, then just tell someone who is a mandated reporter. This is someone who is legally obligated to intervene. This can be a teacher, social workers, nurse, or doctor. Tell them what you know and they will make have to make the calls for you.

Here is the number for the New York CPS registry. If you don't live in New York, they will give you the right number to call:

1-800-342-3720

You're doing a good thing.

Speak to a counselor or Social worker at school. Look up the protective services in your area and call. I think there is a 800 number to report child abuse as well, but I am sorry I do not have number.

Age doesn't matter. Call the police, or better yet, go there and talk face to face with a police officer. They will help you find the best way to go about reporting. In my state, there is a special agency to make reports to. good luck.

if you honestly think that the police won't listen to you try going to your schools guidence consuler. they will have numbers you can call and things that you can do to help. i would always try the police first but a guidence consuler has many resources you can use to help your friend.

If you are sure, go to the police. They will listen if you have any facts to back up your suspicions.

CALL THE DEPT. OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN YOUR AREA.
THEY HAVE TO INVESTIGATE - IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW OLD YOU ARE. REPORT IT.
