I manage a bar. DON'T do it. Between liquor license, building insurance, liquor liability insurance, overhead (beer, liquor, and food costs), payroll, accounting fees, state/federal/local taxes, state/federal/local fees, and utilities (cooking gas, electric, heating costs), you end up with very little left over.
On the other hand, it is a *fun* business to run, so if making a ton of money isn't that important to you, have at it. From a financial standpoint, it pretty much sucks.

It is EXTREMELY hard to own a bar. Especially if you are a student, it will take up nearly all of your time. If it is really something that interests you, wait until you are finished with your education or find an investor. If you bar succeeded, you would make money eventually.. however it takes a good 5 to 10 years to actually pay off of your debt and physically see your earnings.

It is a good idea but it does take time and money. I can't see anyone mkaing alot of money in a bar or lounge unless there is a high demand for it. I guess its just like any other business. You have to think about what kind of stress factor you can handle and how much money you can put into it

First, obatining a liquor license in PA is generally VERY HARD and VERY EXPENSIVE! That much accomplished, it's not that a bar is hard to own, but many of the patrons are hard to deal with! Not a project for a college student. If you need somewhere to hang out, Charlie's in Pittsburgh is a pretty good bar with decent bar food as well. My oldest daughter went to Pitt and introduced us to it!

It sounds good at first but look on the other side of the bar like fight's. I saw a bar close down because a loud mouth got into a fight and got what he deserved but it went to court and the owner lost big time and had to close and sell to pay court cost. They said the owner did't have control over his patron's. LOts of long hours and lost time with the family.

Obtaining the liquor license is sometimes difficult and expensive.
As with any business, the employees are a big expense. Finding competent and reliable people is becoming more of an adventure then in the past decade.
