We have a dominant dog (looks like Benji). Is this a good idea? Are ferrets hard to maintain since I will probably be doing all the work?

For God's sake DON'T get your kids a ferret. They won't take care of it properly and will end up hurting it. Get them another dog or a cat. Ferrets are considered to be Exotic Pocket Pets and are VERY expensive. You also need ALOT of time to spend with them. They are not easy to take care of like a cat and you can't leave them to their own devices. KIDS AND FERRETS DO NOT MIX !

I'll put it this way, if you got a ferret, it would be like having another child. check with a vet to see if you can have one because of the dog, usually if you have a pure breed, they aren't good to have with ferrets, but mutts are ok. But always check with a vet or dog breeder, if possible. I love my 2 ferrets. If you do make the decision to get one, take the dog as well as your kids to pick one out. They each have a personality.

Nope. Ferreta can get along with many animals, even dogs, but the dog you have has hunting instincts against small animals. Also, ferrets are almost like children, they require ALOT of care, so it may not be best for your kids, unless they are really responsible. They are loving pets though, I miss mine very much.

Ferrets are very inquisitive, mischievous and get into everything. I wouldn't let the dog near them. They are hard to maintain and they don't live very long, about 6 years.

Ferrets are crafty escape artists, love to chew on anything and everything and I think they have an awful odor about them. Try sticking your nose in the ferret cage at a pet store. If you can live with that, then go for it! Good luck!

If you do decide to get one, search out a local rescue group. There always tons of ferrets out there who's owners have lost interest and give them up.

Ferrets STINK. Even afted they have been de-scented they have a strong musky stench. If you're ok with that, then get the ferret. I would keep the weasel away from the dog.

I'm not sure if a ferret would be a great pet for young children, they can be pretty vicious.
