Sandblasting was suggested but as the hearth is indoors and cannot be removed this is not an option.

Go to any hardware store and ask for Grate polish. It looks like sparkly grease and comes in tubes similar to acrylic paint. It is a simple case of polishing the slate in the same way you would polish a car. It is not expensive and it will look as new. Careful not to geet it on carpets or wood etc as it stains permanently.

if the scratches are fine, then car some black car polish, that will do a good job..

contact a marble company, they should be able to recommend someone who can come out and polish it for you
