I've heard that now the City of San Francisco is refusing to pay overtime to police officers who handle traffic at 49er games and refusing to run buses to the stadium on game-days. This is in light of the team's reported move to Santa Clara, which the city of San Fran also says should result in the team having to change its name to the Santa Clara Chips.

My question to San Fran fans, especially the locals who hear about this all the time: Is the city being fair to the team? What's going on out there?

Well, first off, an SF rookie gets paid BANK anyways...55 grand a year: no education above high school required. And no - it's not due to the cost of living. I worked there for a lowly 35 grand a year and did just fine.

Second of all, these are not team requirements...the team doesn't bear the cost of it's fans...it plays football. Fans come. If it's a traffic problem...which it is, the city can either cover it - as they benefit from having a pro stadium...or they can let it go.

The team will go where the money is, and if it's SC...I guess thats where they go. It won't be fair to us fans that have held seasons tickets for...
uhhhh...I've has seasons tickets for 34 years now....
BUT it could happen.

I think the city loves the team, it just isn't equipped to adapt very well.

I do take issue, slightly, with the police and bus being left out as the 49ers are a huge economic boost to the community with every home game pulling however many thousands of people into the area around the stadium. I suspect the overtime bus and police would be a lot less than the money lost when the stadium sits empty on a Sunday afternoon.

That being said, it has become more and more prevalent that these franchises are no longer going to be babied by the cities they are in. I still remember someone trotting out a Tampa Bay Giants baseball jersey some years back prior to the Giants getting their new field.

So, how much business will be lost in order of the principle of not supporting millionaires who should be able to support themselves?

The City of San Francisco is not your normal Americana large city. The vast majority of 49er fans who go to games come from the SF Peninsula, South Bay and East Bay.
Most San Franciscans wouldn't care if the team moved to Santa Clara.

I think it is fair and sensible. The Niners have gone on record about their intention to move to Santa Clara, so why should San Francisco continue to extend breaks to them? I really can respect how the city stood up for it's people and didn't allow themselves to be held hostage by the greedy owners of a team. Here in Pennsylvania, we have two new football stadiums, two new baseball stadiums, plus a new indoor arena here in Philly. All constructed with taxpayers money for the most part. All made possible due to the leverage exerted by the teams under the threat of relocation.

I'd be proud of the city of San Francisco.

you will intend to make particular to bypass to Alcatraz, Chinatown (head to the Fortune Cookie production facility), Muir Woods (purely north of S.F., great nature spot), Golden Gate Park (see the S.F. Botanical Gardens, Buffalo Paddock, and de youthful Museum), Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, The Embarcadero, Coit Tower, San Francisco Zoo, Cable automobile Museum, force around the Golden Gate Bridge, experience a cable automobile, force down Lombard St, the crookedest highway interior the international.

Like most professional sports teams the 49's don't want to pay for the costs incured by their presence in the city. Apparently SF feels they are receiving enough of the revenue generated by the 49's to cover the costs of providing extra security etc....

I don't care either way about running busses or anything, but the not paying cops overtime is bullshit. I don't care if it's just traffic, we need to show the boys in blue some grattitude

The 49's should keep the fan base they have, theve already ticked off half of Cali anyways, they shouldn't burn bridges because the city dosen't want to dump more money into them.

The Niners totally suck this year, but seem to think that the City owes them a living. If they want to move to Santa Clara, I say let 'em. They'll suck down there, too.

The team should pay for all this. Why should the taxpayers of SF be burdened?
