I have done the crazy day after Thanksgiving shopping almost every year of my adult life. Some years have been very worth it and other have sucked horribly. My best shopping year was 3 years ago in Austin, TX. The Ashley's furniture was offering a free $500 micro-fiber sofa to the first 25 people, no purchase necessary and no catches. Well my sister in law had never done the Thanksgiving evening wait, so I talked her and my husband into going with me. We got there at 9 PM Thanksgiving Day (all the kids were with grandparents - I would NEVER take a child out into that craziness.) We were 21, 22, & 23 in line and sitting in lawn chairs, covered in blankets & drinking a thermos of hot chocolate. Just before 10 PM a camera crew showed up and interview all of us. We looked awful, but it was fun/funny. My mother in law recorded the news w/ us on it. At 5 AM the manager came out (by then there was close to 75 people out there) and said that everyone in the door by 6AM was going to get the voucher for the free sofa and free delivery. So that was my best experience with the day after Thanksgiving maddness.

I must admit I do shop that day, actually they have the 5-11 am sales at Wal Mart Sears and Freds so I get up at 3:30 am and I am in Wal Mart by 4:15 so I can have all the sale items in my cart before the crowds start piling in, then at 5 am I simply check out but there are some people that get there at like midnight. I know its crazy but I will do what I have to to be able to get my kids what they want for Christmas.

I am SOOO with you on that! I used to be an assistant manager at Wal-Mart and OMG that is a complete NIGHTMARE! I worked in this one store that didn't open until 6 am, and the line started forming 4 across at 3:30 am. By the time we opened the doors, the line was over half a mile long...and I was out of shopping carts in 10 minutes. The store was so packed that it took me 45 minutes to get from the front registers to the garden center to help the cashier with a key flick. I sent three employees to the emergency room that day from being run over by customers with shopping carts. I broke up countless fights between customers who were grabbing merchandise out of each other's carts, complaining that they took the last one, or they didn't deserve to buy 3 of this or whatever...NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

After working retail for a long time, I stay the hell away from any store the day after Thanksgiving! If I do any shopping that day, it's on ebay!

I went the year before last with one of my girlfriends - It was a blast! We met for coffee at 4:30 am and were to the stores by 5am - I was surprised there wasn't a line - it was not bad at all!!! In fact, it was better than waiting until mid day or even a week or two after...I loved it!

I am a self-proclaimed shopaholic but I am not enough of a glutton for punishment to brave shopping the day after Thanksgiving.

One year I did ALL my shopping for the following year and I thought it was great. I had just visited people to deliver this years pressents and was well aware of things people collected, decor of house, what they liked and wanted. (For example I discovered someone collected Christmas snow globes). I was able to buy at a big discount, wrapped and stored the items, and was good to go.
Most years, however, I just don't have the extra money to shop for next year.

I do my Christmas shopping through out the year. Picking up what I think a person would like, when I see it. Avoids the rush and crowds and pick-pockets. Mine's done already.
