After some research, I found out the players like point guard Steve Blake (of the Milwaukee Bucks) and guard/forward Desmond Mason (of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets) live in Portland, Oregon during the off-season.
Dwyane Wade (of the Miami Heat) has also recently purchased a house to remain in the area where he grew up, Chicago.
Hope this helps.

to get some rest after the long season that they have to endure and because most players don't want to do something stupid to get themselves in trouble and bring any distractions to the team that they play for

Their houses are so big they don't know how to get out. They just invite everyone to their house to stay and play like a resort.

To rest up. Professional sports damages the human body much. So to stay healthy, they have to rest up and give their bodies some time to heal up.
