If you want to do research and have some control over it, as in develop your own projects and that sort of thing, you'll probably need a PhD and you may benefit from having an MD first. They may have lab techs who have masters degrees, but its probably hard to get a job in that field with a BS. I would start out majoring in biology.

You're probably looking at a minimum of an extra three years after you graduate from college, more if you do an MD. You could do this part-time, but its already a lot of years of school. I would look for scholarships to help pay for it - there are a number of scholarships out there for studies related to medicine - and go full time.

The best way to find out exactly what education you need for a field is to talk to somebody who's doing what you want to do. Since this relates to medicine, ask your doctor. Call a university that has a medical school and ask them. Every state has a lab where people who work with infectious diseases. I don't know whether parasitic diseases fall under that, but they'd be able to answer questions. Then, there is always the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) website or the NIH (National Institute of Health).
