Within the firm's building every computer is in a local network. for example we can access some special websites and applications about the ongoing activities of the firm. all we should do is type on browser : "localweb" for applications or "intranet" for web pages. but when I am away from the building I want to use these facilities. Is this possible. If it is, what should I do.

Sure, this is possible. You're employer may not allow it though.

Basically, all you need is a VPN or Virtual Private Network connection to your corporate LAN. The VPN connection is most commonly established by placing some VPN hardware in your corporate office (it could be a VPN concentrator or a Cisco PIX firewall or any of a bunch of other applications). Then you'd need to load some simple VPN client software on your PC.

Then you can cannot.

Work with your corporate IT staff to do this.

The reason they may not allow this is because it does open up some security concerns for the corporate LAN.

Good answer with the VPN. You may also want to check if they are running small business server 2003, or windows server 2003. They can easily publish the intranet to the internet without a lot of the security hassle of a vpn.

this only can be done if you establish a VPN connection (virtual private network) you have to ask your network administartor to creat a secure access for you on there routers and you have a VPN client that will connect to your network, this way you will be as if you are on the same network and your Laptop/PC is connected to the office network directly and you even can print from home on any printer in your office
