Check on anything that you have installed recently. Norton Antivirus suddenly made my CD drives vanish a few years ago so I had to uninstall it and stop using it and then all was fine. Some software like that can cause them to vanish. Try uninstalling recent software and see if that helps. If your drive has power - drawer opens etc then it should be recognised even if it won't read a CD. Try a system restore to before you had this problem and all should be well.

First power down your computer and boot up. If that does not help, go to start, my computer, click drive c or whatever drive is your hard drive on the left hand side click view system information. The next box that comes click on the hardware tab. On that tab click device manager, and click the cdrom/dvd icon. this will tell you if your computer is detecting the the cd drive. if it is it will show Right click and update drive there will be easy to follow directions. If not reinstall from the cd rom if you dont have cd rom locate the make of the cd player and go to the website to obtain software associated with your hardware. If that does not work try opening the case and making sure the connectors connected appropriately. if they are you have a bad cd rom drive and it will need to be replaced.

I've had this happen to me on several occasions. CD-ROM drives seem to be particularly feeble these days. It's a disposable part. Go to your local Office Supply store and purchase a new one. The cheapest shouldn't run you more than $25.00 or so and may be less. Pull your existing drive and replace it with the new one. CD-ROM drives are all auto-detected.

There is a slight chance that you disabled the IDE bus in your PC's BIOS. You can boot into your BIOS and see if the CD-ROM is detected there, but my guess is that it just died.
