Bread shrinks in the toaster because of a loss of moisture. A good portion of bread's mass is water.
Clothes shrink in the dryer because of a rapid loss of water which causes a more urgent need to fill the space. When you dry clothes gradually this space is replaced by water from the air.
I hope this helps!

Dryer shrinking is sue to the material, usually 100% cotton. Toaster shrinking is due to the moisture being taken out of the bread.

The bread shrinks slightly because toasting dries it out and the moisture is what makes it 'plump'. Clothes, I'm not sure, but I think it's the same thing.

The common occurrence is the removal of moisture from the toast and clothes. That is why they shrink.

Moisture evaporates from the bread as it cooks in the heat. Bread with less moisture = smaller bread.

Partly the same, you are removing moisture
But partly because you are causing the long chain molecules in the bread to contract because of heating.
That's why a slice of cold toast is always slightly bigger than it was when it was hot.

No, it's not. In bread, the inherant water in the slices are evaporating, causing it to lose both mass and volume. But in clothes, the wetting and heating simply cause the fibers to bunch up closer together; there's no evaporation.

When you toast bread it slightly dehydrates. Less moisture = less density, therefore causing the shrinkage.
