Okay to be honest it will hurt in some spots more than others and you really have to be carefully on who you go to as well. For your first tattoo a large piece may not be the wisest choice. My first was ying-yang with water flame contrast. After that I went and got a new one each time I was to deploy over seas. So I've gotten quite a collection. I do regret one that just wasn't my style and it really doesn't fit in with the rest and an other that I put intials on for someone that turned out to not to be the friend I thought.
You have thought it out for a while and have made a plan but I do urge you to consider a small piece that is as classic as the one you have in mind.

Yes, your body is your temple, and you should respect it. With that said, tattoos are artwork and what better way to display artwork than on your temple? Although the bible says you should not mark your body, some people interpret that remark with things that are detrimental to their bodies, such as leisons or self-mutilation. I don't feel that a tatto qualifies as either. And, miss perfect, no tattoos.... can you please point out the place in the bible where it says that specifically? You may have heard your minister's interpretation of a passage..... anyway, her question was not whether or not you think tattoos are okay, it is do you have one? No would have sufficed.
As for my tattoo experiences, I have three, and I have my labret pierced (under my bottom lip in the center). My very frist tattoo was done by a boy I was dating when I was fifteen years old. It is on my right shoulder blade of a heart.... not even filled in. He did the tattoo in the middle of my living room floor with a sewing needle and Indian ink. It did hurt a little bit, but the pain goes away rather quickly.
The first professional tattoo I got was when I was 18 years old at a place in Lawrence, KS. At the time, it was a renowned tattoo shop..... Teach and Peppa from Salt and Peppa got tattoos there, as did several other famous people. Even the guy who travels around the US getting puzzle pieces tatted on his body. Anyhow, it was Olde English on my lower back of my name (Summer). It hurt only when he was doing the outlining of the name, because you have to be very precise when doing the outline. After the outline was finished, my lower back was sweaty and numb, so I couldn't feel the rest. When I was 21, I got my name in Chinese (it's one character since my name's a season) below the O.E. tatt. That one hurt a little more for some reason. When I was 22, I got my labret pierced. Piercings hurt worse than tattoos (from my experience).
Since you are getting a big piece (it sounds like half of your back), you will have to go in for multiple sessions.... you can't go in and get a piece that large done in one sitting..... it's too much trauma on your body. So, be prepared for multiple days of pain. You will probably have to go in once a month so that the section that is already done has time to heal
Anyhow, yes, it will hurt. The pain goes away shortly and the masterpiece that you carry around for the rest of your life is well worth an hour of pain. I hope that this helped a little bit!

I didn't get one on my back, but I got one my leg its 6 inches, and its of Mark Rydens "the rose"....I was really nervous, but after he started it didnt hurt that much, only the first couple minutes, because your not used to it. But then you relax. Mine took two hours. You'll do fine, just relax. what really bothered me was the noise the tattoo gun makes, and the artist keeps stopping and starting. You'll be suprised it really doesnt hurt that much. Just be sure its something that you want to do, because the tattoo will be with you the rest of your life. I really like your idea with the cross and the crown of thorns. Good luck.

my 1st one was a seahorse that looks awesomeI got it on my right ankle, at True Image tattoo. It did'nt hurt as bad as I thought it would, I was with my sister and mom, it was a gift from my sister! The pain is really weak, its more like a burn, sometimes it pinches a nerve but its still ok. The next one I got was a skull on my right shoulder, my boyfriend made a tat gun and did it himself. Now that one hurt a little more.

My first tattoo was done with a homemade tattoo gun. It was on lower calf. Eagle head with children's name. It is about 6in x 4in.
I would advise you however that if you want something that big that you get a small one to start out with. I have 2 on my back and the one that goes across my spine is very tender. You might want to think that out before you do it.

Any truly tattoo retailer can have such a lot artwork to select from it is not even humorous. They too can draw like mad - so your creativeness is the bounds. Dont get a tramp stamp - all ladies have them. Instead get a small piece in your ankle or anything

My first tat is a pair of roses on the top of my foot.
I went to a tattoo shop in the town where I went to college.
A couple of my college friends were with me.
I got the tat as a reminder of some good stuff in my life that I wanted to think about a lot.
Enjoy your tat. :)
