I have a hard time believing your doctor didn't already tell you this!

After such a tramatic surgery, you should wait 2 weeks minimum for yourself to heal. I would personally also not lift anything heavier than 5 pounds. Was it a bilateral proceedure or unilateral? Either way, it really depends on the type of work you do.

Call your doctor, they will have a better Hx on what will suit you.

When can I start to do exercise?

This depends on the type of operation you had. If you had keyhole surgery, you could start gentle exercise within 2 weeks of the operation. If you had open surgery then you should wait 6 weeks for your abdomen to heal. Exercise like swimming is usually safe, as long as the wounds are healing well, as this is a non-impact sport.
When can I return to work?

This depends on the operation you had and what type of work you do. In some cases you could return to work with a few weeks if the operation was keyhole in type and your job not too strenuous but you may feel tired and less able to cope. Coming back part-time, if this is an option, may be a good idea. In general, after 6 weeks you should be able to return to most jobs
