Supply and demand.
1) The whether great, the water is warm, etc. Everyone wants to live on the beach or at least have a view of it. However, there isn't enough land to go around so it goes to the highest bidder.
The same thing happens at Aspen or Vail Colorado. Beautiful, upscale resort destinations like Santa Barbra CA will always be more expensive than places like Death Vally CA.
2) It's the most remote population center in the world. Almost everything needs to be shipped great distances and that ads to the cost.

Tourist areas, in general, are more expensive places to live than those that aren't. The more that the place is a destination place, the more expensive it would be to live-- especially if it is a US destination. Also, you may want to check their cost of living index, it might be the case where jobs in the area compensate for the cost.

It's only expensive when you want a condo with a pool, and a view of the ocean isn't it?
It isn't expensive for the locals.. and if you don't mind not a place without a view.

Supply and demand. The weather makes it an ideal place to live so lots of people, lots of demand, higher prices. Also, most everything has to be imported...so higher prices.

Everything you are looking for (except for some locally-grown produce) has to be shipped in. If you want energy, gasoline, building materials, manufactured goods, and clothing it came in by ship or plane and you paid its transportation cost.
