This is a good question and one that I've been looking for a way to explain clearly. Depending on the business, there are a variety of reasons to be online. As already stated, exposure is one of the best reasons. The cost of storage, hosting, and bandwidth have gone down a great deal over the last several years. A business can brand its products or services all day every day online for a fraction of the cost of traditional print, radio, or television ads. What's more, there's no limit to space.
However, businesses have been finding that the presence of a site is not enough in today's market. With the dominance of Google and Yahoo!, businesses need to craft their site to be found by the right users and customers to help accomplish goals. Whether these goals be branding and awareness or sales and lead generation, getting the best prospects to the site at the right time tends to be the most important aspect of an online site.
Finally, (and by finally I mean that I'm done although there are plenty of other reasons) the recent popularity of Second Life has shown that a new market has emerged that plays by different rules than the traditional and physical markets. Online presences offer businesses a means to communicate with customers on a new level. While best practices and new trends are emerging every day, many companies have found that instilling confidence in their ability to do the job or deliver the product is one of the biggest benefits.

It depends what sort of business you have to start with.
There are still a large majority of businesses operating without a website because they do not understand anything about the Internet and don't want to learn.
The biggest advantage of having a website is to find new customers that you would not get otherwise.
The Internet is continually growing and more and more people are shopping online.
The biggest problem with a website is to find someone to build it for you without ripping you off. Most web designers will build you a nice looking website. But the majority of them won't optimise it to be found by the search engines. They won't tell you about it either and 3 months down the track, you will be very disappointed with the Internet because no-one has visited your website and you have not made a cent out of it.
To have a web designer optimising your website will cost you extra money. But if you are not prepared to do it, you might as well not have a website.
There is more to it that meet the eye. It start by choosing a domain name which has you business name into it or the name of the product you are selling. And if you have several words, you separate them with a "-". Like my website is Aussies-Online.

Why would you want to advertise in the Yellow Pages? Why would you put a sign out in front of your business?
Web sites are a form of advertising that allows the company to reach a number of people on the Internet that they would not otherwise reach.
In the case of a sign outside the busines, only people passing by will see it. In the Yellow Pages, only people who live in that area will receive the yellow pages with their ad in it. But on the internet, a company operating from a garage in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin can be spotted just as easily as one with a storefront on 5th Avenue in New York.

Unless you really have a lucrative business, it isn't important. I have seen many sites that are cheap looking, with no real valuable info etc.
Ultimately, MOST businesses that attain them, do so for the purpose of giving their clients easy access to company info, contact info of their partners or employees, downloading of documents, payment of bills, email questions etc.

So users can get valuable information such as history, reputation, and contact information.
Without it, there isn't much way to know about it. Also, it is very cost effective, instead of paying a TV commerical, a webpage desigh is very easy and cheap.
