air fresheners will mask the odor while products such as baking soda will absorb the odors, as well as draw moisture from the cabinet/cupboard. Which wouldn't be a bad idea for shoe storage.

Arm and Hammer has a new refridgerator freshener than sticks to the side of the refridgerator so it doesn't take up as much space. I put them in my shoe closet also. It doesn't have any scent, so you aren't just covering up one smell with another. You could also try an small bag of activated charcoal.

Put cedar shoe trees in your shoes they deodorize your shoes and then the cabinet won't smell, also they add to the life of your shoes help them maintain their shape and absorb moisture.

any kind of air freshner, i like the gell ones, california sents i think their called.
