I have always wondered this. I even do it myself. It almost seems like an instinctual thing. Anybody know?

I think you are 100% right- it's an instinctive, protective mechanism, to keep dry, or warm. Like putting your hands up to shield your eyes from the glare of the sun- you do it without thinking about it or being aware of it.

The sun produces the level of vitamin D in your body, this makes you active and happy. Without it you are more prone to depression, this is why many in the medical field always advise people to get outside, or open up the blinds.
