When some hear the term "Antisocial," they confuse it with "Asocial" or "Non-social." Antisocial doesn't refer to someone who avoids society or interacting with others. "Anti" means 'opposing' or 'against,' and refers to the tendency of those with ASPD to fight against, or at the very least disregard, the rules or expectations of the community they live in.

ASPD may be associated with criminal behavior, but those with ASPD may also act quite charming and charismatic. The person who is diagnosed with ASPD is comfortable with manipulating others to achieve their own goals. They may manipulate others by flattery, threats, or whatever means works best.

The term really covers a large group of personality disorders showing some, or most, of the following traits:
1. Emotional immaturity
2. Impulsivity
3. Egocentricity and selfishness
4. Antisocial or amoral behavior
5. Poor judgment
6. Unreliability or undependability
7. Lack of appreciation for the consequences of his actions
8. Inability to postpone immediate gratification
9. Conflict with, or defiance of, authority
10. Inability to profit from experience
11. Tendency to project his own shortcomings onto the world around him
12. A sort of inner conviction that he is immune to the usual social customs and laws.

I can't help you with the rest of your question. But I would guess that a lot of hardened criminals would fall under this category.

ASPD is an axis II disorder as characterized by the DSM-IV. You might have better luck looking for the origins of "Sociopath" which was the parent diagnosis, though with less criteria specified. A personality disorder isn't really "founded" but more developed over time with more research. As more research is done, it becomes mroe accepted.
