I grew up in the '70's and '80's. My favorite toy as a kid was my Green Machine. It was a weird thing you peddled and drove with two sticks like a tank. I think they brought them back recently.

I also had a thing for good old fashioned green army men. You could by me a million action figures but nothing was better than a dozen or so bags of green army men, purchased for 70 cents a bag down at the Safeway. In fact, I have the battle of the Alamo set up in my office right now. Some habits die hard.

And, of course, the best toy in the universe was any time my parents bought a new fridge, TV, or dryer - the big box those things came in were awesome. When my folks bought a side by side fridge once my sister and I painted it to look (sorta) like the Millenium Falcon. We would sit back to back in that thing and shoot at Darth Vader by peeking through little windows we'd cut out of it.

Damn, my parents wasted a fortune on a bunch of cheap plastic crap we never really played with. I guarantee you, if someone brought me a big box or a big cardboard barrel I'd probably still want to play with it...

From a child of the late 70s/early 80's

Action Force: Great action figures which didn't stand the test of time

Rubix Cube: But I never did manage it without a cheat's guide

Toy Soldiers: Not so politically correct now, but...

ZX Spectrum: Wow! I had the 16K one that was later painfully upgraded to a whopping 48K.

Monopoly: Mum usually left the game early leaving my competitive father and me to slog it out.

Toys? I just loved going outside and playing with the neighborhood kids! I lived in a small community with farms around us so we had barns to climb around in, hay to jump in, animals to ride and pet, also had woods that we would hide in and make clubhouses ! I don't remember any specific toy, we all had bikes and ball's gloves and bats! We had a river and lake within biking distance and would swim and fish!

Lets see... I loved Hot Wheels Cars (Back when the slogan was lean the way), my bike, and legos. I used to go outside and play on my bike until video games corrupted our minds.
