Not a lady, and never had plates inserted, but I have had an ankle injury that lingered for months. About 10 years ago, I twisted my ankle while running in dress shoes to my commuter bus for work. It wasn't broken; just a bad sprain. However, I found out that a sprain can be worse than a break. It literally hurt me for five months. I couldn't put full weight on it and was limping around the entire time before the pain went completely away. In high school, I had a similar type of ankle sprain from playing football, and again it took a few months before it completely went away.
Unfortunately, ankles are very delicate and heal very slowly because we are constantly putting weight on them. They do get better, eventually, but it's agonizing going through it. Not sure if the discomfort of the plates/screws will ever go away. But tell your friend to hang in there, and do the treatments and therapy as the doctors have prescribed, which should help significantly.

I had a really horrible sprain about seven years ago. It took a very very long time to heal; and even now, I don't have the same flexibility and strength in that ankle I used to have. It aches sometimes and causes dull pain. I can only imagine it would be even worse if your friend's injury required plates and screws. If the pain is sharp, though, your friend needs to talk to her doctor. It could be a sign of something a little more serious involving the previous surgeries, like maybe something not healing correctly.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Yes you will have to. Go for your health care professional who would desire to do an MRI simply to ensure there's no chipped bone floating approximately. They would desire you to have a boot for a at the same time so the tendons/ligaments have a steady atmosphere to heal in. The tendons across the ankle, primarily when you went over at the external of your ankle do take decades to heal and are primarily fragile however after eight months I might advise seeing a health care professional simply to double assess.

Yes. I twisted my ankle badly when I was a child, and 12 years later it'll still flare up when the weather is bad or for no reason at all.
