The Temptations did the original back in the 60's. However Gearge Micheal also copyed this with Seals Crazy in the 90's.

it's a motown song written by motown writers -whitfield and strong. like alot of motown songs more than one motown band recorded it. first it was done by the undisputed truth in '71. they really didnt' get anywhere with the song. motown's greatest band the temptations did it in 1973, took it to number one and won a grammy.
dennis edwards had a big share of lead vocals on it, (dennis replaced david ruffin as the band's lead singer when david was fired by the band for excessive drug use, huge ego and being a pain in the ***.) the other temps singin on the song were melvin, richard and damon. otis sand only backup on it.
the backin band was none other than the greatest session band in history. the funk brothers.
