If you have the drive, enthusiasm, and people skills this could be a viable option. You should talk to others in the specific company you are looking at and find out how many hours they put in to make the money they do. Is the time and energy you will need to spend to make it profitable for you worth it?

For some people, these types of opportunities are just that. An opportunity, not necessarily a successful business lifestyle.
All of them are firmly based on recruitment. Even something as subtle as MaryKay which has a product to selll (versus an intangible service), financial success depends on bringing more people into the fold of the company.
I've never heard of even one that didn't require fees and costs. Something as basic as state licenses/certifications can easily nickel and dime someone not skilled in regenerating money.
I'm not sure when "job" was replaced with business opportunity, but there isn't an internet job board that isn't 90% of these "business success stories". Success is relative, be wary.

I've been approached by acquaintances w/their multi-level mkting schemes (Amway for example) and it strained our relationships. They weren't pleased when I didn't take the bait, I sometimes felt I was being used by them, and I felt sorry that they were so desparate for money especially when they already have a good job but they just want more.

Can't say I've done that to comment. However, there's a good resource of articles on the subject at http://mlm.hammocksurvivalguide.com/
