I've had a few Japanese flatmates over the years. On the whole the girls have been quite shy & quiet & they prefer to socialise with other Japanese girls than with other cultures. They seem to stay "children" for a much longer time than us Westerners, which may or may not be a good thing. The guys are pretty much the same, though I have met one or two really crazy ones. The country has a few odd things about it (what's with the schoolgirl fixation in so many manga cartoons?) but on the whole I think most people see Japan as "our friend in the East" - a counterpoint to China and Korea.

well, as you can tell from my name, i am of chinese origin and although i've read a lot of stuff as to what they did to the chinese in world war 2 when they invaded china, i always put my differences with the japanese aside. i remember watching the football, the asian cup a few years ago, which was held in china and the hype surrounding the match between china and japan, and by god the atmosphere was hostile and so fiery. there were chinese football fans buring the japanese flag, they were angry, aggressive, people venting and hurling anti- japanese abuse. it was past feelings of discontent and bitterness being echoed and reignited all over again.
despite all that, they are very technological and the japanese culture is often quirky and often outlandish but it is so very different and unique. particularly in stark contrast to chinese and korean traditions and cultures. they're so into their karaoke and manga and the tv shows and films they have over there range from being odd and to downright violent and twisted. coincidentally enough, there is a japanese student who studies on the same course as me at university and she is a likable and polite person.
the japanese have their own way of living life over there and their obsession with all things western is, at times, unbelievable. not to mention their fascination with david beckham! that whole china/japan rivalry thing isn't really a big deal to me therefore, though people would compare it america/canada, england/scotland and other so-called rival nations. the japanese are nice people, nevertheless.

It's a fascinating culture and the people are mostly very friendly and fun. They have a lot of innovation in Japan, too, and they seem to like a lot of Western culture. It is interesting to see how they interpret Western customs and culture, like a mirror held up to the West that tells us about ourselves from a different perspective. Some of their art is also quite exquisite.

the first repondant was right they make superb cars not to mention motor bikes. i had the very good fortune some years ago to spend a year of my life in japan and i cannot speak too highly of the country or people.the people are kind, courteous, always ready to help you. they are exceptionally clean and hygienic.the women are very special, but i won't go down that road for fear of being chastised from our yahoo gods. the country itself is facinating.. anyway nuf sed. except nippon ichi bon.

Decent people, hard workers, overachievers. We Americans generally like our Pacific Rim friends and allies.
Funny tourists, though. Always armed with digital cameras and camcorders every step of the way.
