Hmmm.....I dunno..once I was in a very, very cold northern climate and the heat went out. The refrigerator was on and set at 38 degrees. I crawled into the refrigerator, closed the door, and spent the night in there. It was the only thing that saved me from freezing to death! uh, sorry - couldn't resist, all the good answers were taken. :)

Without any detail regarding the extent of time away from this particular "refridge", I suggest any that is an extended period should suggest turning off, or unplugging those things that use resources unneccessarily. Just leave the doors ajar.

It serves no purpose, other than profit to the power company, for you to leave an appliance in a state of USING, when in fact it isn't or won't be used over long periods. It will not effectively change the operation, once "back on"

One answer suggests they leave theirs on all the time? I once had a beach house, and though only 60 miles away, if I knew it would be unoccupied for any extended time period, NO appliances were left "ON"

The only other issue you might have, is the location of your vacation house. IE: A house in Northern Climates, should likely have issues addressed such as plumbing and electric service, in possibilities of storm or freezing temps.

If you are using the refrigerator every day then it would take more electricity to bring it back down to the desired temp.
If you are not using it for a week or two then you would be better unplugging it as you are going to reap no benefit from leaving it on.

I personnel don't think this will hurt a thing. Know if you were plugging an unplugging say every week this would be bad. It should not hurt a thing.

Make sure you leave the doors open so the moisture can dry out or you could end up with slime/mold/mildew. If you leave a tray or bowl of baking soda in there the fridge won't smell funky when you return.

It's not a bad thing just so long you haven't forgotten anything in it.
