i would say that your best and safest bet would to be to wait until you got there. as soon as you get to a hostel etc you will meet like mindeded travellers.
there are some strange people in chatrooms.......all sorts of wierdos.
i spent a year traveliing in oz 10 years ago and had the best time and made some great friends.
