It's to avoid the appearance of impropriety.
Corporations currently spend over $1 billion per year on ethics consultants. The result is a substitution of appearances for substance. The so-called experts make the mistake of focusing not on actual impropriety but on the appearance of impropriety. This guy is probably so scared of what people will think, that he is being overly cautious. Just go along with it so he will feel as though he is "doing the right thing".

If you will be buying things for the company and/or making a deposit in the bank, this is standard practice, at least when I used to work in retail it was. The idea is: if a thief sees a daily pattern and tries to rob him, at least you or some other co-worker will be nearby to call the fuzz - you know - the heat - the bluecoats - THE COPS.

Of course, if he wants you to follow him around for none of the above reasons, then he should be reported as a weirdo.
