Hi all,

I sprained my ankle in a fall around 12 weeks ago, and I’m still suffering quite a lot of pain. I had an X-ray at the time so I know nothing was broken or fractured, and I did everything that I was told- ice, rest, elevation, trying to walk when possible so as it didn’t stiffen up (obviously without over-exerting it), but it still becomes extremely painful if I do something as simple as step on a stone in the street. It isn’t as swollen as it was when it first happened, but it does still swell slightly. I’ve been wearing flat, supportive boots or shoes since it happened, cannot even put my foot in anything with the slightest heel, and am getting a bit frustrated at the length of time it is taking to heal. Is it normal for it to take this long?

thanks

Hi sprained ankles can take mths before it gets bck to normal, swelling and pain. When you twist you ankle you sprain everything else which surrounds the area, ligaments, muscles etc so these have to heal to and get bck to normal too.Sprains can be just as painful as some fractures ,just make sure you still elevate the ankle, mobilised the ankle alot swimming is good for sprained ankles.Wear suitable shoes what you are doing, and take pain relief when needed. If you dont get no better in another mth pop back to you gp he may send you for another x-ray just to make sure you havent done no other injury like a torn ligament or even a fracture as some fractures do not show up on the x-ray if theres alot off swelling.Give it a little time and see how you go in the next mth.Good Luck

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

go see a physio definately. you've prob partially torn you ATFL (anterior talofibula ligament) on the outside of you ankle. with your toes pointed this lig is on a stretch hence why heels kill. you will need ultrasound, maybe taping and lots of exercises to regain movement, strength and proprioception (the foots balance basically) this is very important as without these exercises you are very likely to go over on it again. All the advice you were given at the time was correct, immobilising it usually causes more problems. if you can't get a physio appointment quickly ask another question about exercises post ankle lig injury and i'll teach you some (i'm a physio, i won't even charge!) hope this helps

and don't just leave it to "wait and see", nothing will change

I once twisted my ankle quite badly and was persuaded ny my friends to go to a doctor who immediately sent me to a Physiotherapist (I went private for this as there was a 3 month waiting list on the NHS by which time my ankle would have been ruined for life!). The physio said I had virtually completely torn the ligament in my ankle, she gave me lots of exercises to do and did exercises on it herself as well as using ultrasound. It took me about 6 weeks to get back to normal ( 4 weeks before I could wear shoes!) but his would have much longer without Physio.

Go and see a Physio!

everybody is different, the problem is its ligament damage, you cant run it off, time is the only proper healer.

dont overdo it, if you feel it weak again, just rest.. its horrible i know, i've done it sooooooooooo many times!!

when you are better, a good way of strengthening your ligaments is to get a pillow, put it on the floor and stand on it with your knees together and bend your legs then move left to right.
this builds up your ankles, when someone told me i thought they were winding me up but it does work!!

hope you get better soon!!
